A Typical Political Smear of Obama

Here we go again - the sort of twisted wordplay that the media repeats endlessly to hamstring Democratic candidates. The Republicans like Joe Scarborough are running wild with this, and I'm pretty sure Sean and Rush are as well. Let's see the quote:
The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person, who, uh, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know there's a reaction that's been been bred into our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way and that's just the nature of race in our society.
Let's break it down
The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't.
Barack's grandmother is not a bigot. He just said it.
But she is a typical white person
Typical white person is not a bigot. Oh my gawd, he just said the "typical white person" is nice, like his grandmother. Get the rope!

But she is a typical white person, who, uh, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know there's a reaction that's been been bred into our experiences that don't go away
People are afraid of strangers, especially if they look different. You know, as a toddler, I was afraid of my grandfather's beard (and he was a white guy!). And some peoples' fears are completely irrational - for instance a lot of people are afraid of snakes and driving over bridges, and these are fears that often never overcome, so you can't really say that these are moral failures either.
and that sometimes come out in the wrong way and that's just the nature of race in our society.
Because some times good people say something awkward ("the wrong way") and they shouldn't be called "racist." That was the take home message from what Obama was saying. I think the GOP is panicked at the thought of Obama rising above the Reverend Wright story. They are also panicked that Obama could disarm the race issue and their whispered screaming smear campaign by candidly answering their smears and making them look foolish. So the first time Obama used the word "white," the GOP smear machine went to DefCon 4 and started text messaging the pre-written smears about Obama's racism. This is ironic at so many levels, but mostly because Obama was saying that race baitors should not twist someone's words to call them "racists," and that specifically he was saying that whites should not be afraid to talk about race. And of course, the status quo is not going to stand for anyone saying anything that dangerous, so of course they twisted his words to call him a racist.

Use small quotes in your title, it doesn't look right right now.

Otherwise great diary!

Re: A Typical Political Smear of Obama (none / 0)

Excuse me, I don't like being lumped into any category called "typical White person." That's putting me in a box without knowing who I am--and it does not play to anything resembling "unity."

As A Fairly Typical White Guy (2.00 / 1)

I resent the pandering brain damaged douche bags trying to manipulate me with tired white identity politics.

Good diary.

You may want to add the whole tape of the interview.  This tape shows that BHO gave a good interview, and he wasn't throwing all white folks under the bus, or whatever the newest false allegation may be.

And, bigger picture, going on sports stations may be good venues for BHO.  With his interest in sports, he should be just as good on these programs as he is on Tyra and Ellen.

Yes, well, I think we've all experienced that. Old person beards can be very unsettling.

And the "typical white person" thing is the biggest nonissue I've heard in a week.

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.

Re: A Typical Political Smear of Obama (2.00 / 1)

He did NOT say this as a pejorative statement. It is clear from the context that he means she is an "ordinary," or "regular" or "everyday" person. He thinks the world of his grandmother.

You people are following the RW media in twisting every word he says to fit your agenda. If you disagreed with this re: things said and done about Hillary and Bill and Ferraro, etc., why then do you not disavow this kind of thing here with re: to Obama.
